🗣️ Struggling With the Speech Test? Here’s Help for Non-Native English Speakers

As part of the system checks, you will be asked to read a sentence aloud while your voice is recorded. This is just to verify your microphone and speaking ability- not an English fluency test. If you’re a non-native English speaker, don’t worry - you can absolutely pass this with a few simple tips.

✅ What the Speech Test Looks For

What It ChecksHow You Can Pass
Voice clarity and volumeSpeak clearly and at a normal volume — not too soft or too loud
Sentence accuracyRead exactly what’s shown on screen, word for word
Background noiseFind a quiet room and close windows, doors, and background apps
Mic input qualityUse your laptop mic or a basic headset — avoid covering it with your hand or clothes

🗣️ Tips to Pass as a Non-Native Speaker

  • Don’t rush. Read at a calm, steady pace - clarity matters more than speed.
  • Speak naturally. No need to fake an accent or over-pronounce.
  • Practice aloud once before clicking “Start Recording”.
  • If you’re unsure of a word, sound it out confidently — don’t skip or replace it.
  • Avoid filler sounds like “uh”, “umm”, or whispering.

⚙️ Before You Begin

  • Make sure your microphone is unmuted and working (you can test in your system settings)
  • Sit in a quiet space and avoid fans, TV, or talking around you
  • Close apps like Zoom, Teams, or Meet that may be using the mic
