If screen sharing isn’t working, shows a black screen, or you’re getting permission errors on your Mac during your assessment, macOS Screen Recording permissions may not be granted. macOS requires explicit Screen Recording permission for browsers to capture and share your screen. This guide helps you troubleshoot Mac-specific screen sharing issues and grant the necessary permissions.

✅ Common Causes and Fixes

What might be wrongHow to fix it
Browser doesn’t have Screen Recording permissionGrant Screen Recording permission to your browser.
Go to System Settings (or System Preferences) > Privacy & Security > Screen Recording. Check the box next to your browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge). Important: Your browser must completely quit and restart after granting this permission, close all browser windows, wait 10 seconds, then reopen.
Screen Recording permission is required for screen sharing on Mac.
Permission prompt never appearedIf macOS never prompted you for Screen Recording permission, manually check:System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen Recording.
If your browser isn’t listed, try screen sharing again, macOS should prompt you. If still no prompt, add your browser manually by clicking the ”+” button and selecting it from Applications folder.
Screen share shows black screen after granting permissionEnsure you completely quit and restarted your browser after granting Screen Recording permission.
Important: Clicking the red X doesn’t quit on Mac, use Cmd+Q or Chrome menu > Quit Chrome.
Permissions don’t take effect until the browser fully restarts.
After restarting, try screen sharing again.
Multiple browsers causing confusionIf you’ve used multiple browsers, ensure you granted Screen Recording permission to the specific browser you’re using for your assessment.
Each browser needs its own permission.
Check System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen Recording and verify your active browser is checked.
Screen Recording permission is grayed outIf the Screen Recording checkbox is grayed out and you can’t change it, you may not have administrator access.
Click the lock icon at bottom left of System Settings, enter your password (or admin password), then try checking the box again. Some corporate or school Macs restrict this, contact IT if locked.
macOS version too oldScreen Recording permission was introduced in macOS Catalina (10.15). If using an older macOS version (Mojave or earlier), update to at least macOS Catalina, or preferably the latest version.
Apple menu > System Settings > Software Update.
Screen sharing requires modern macOS security features.
Permission was granted but then revokedmacOS can revoke permissions if it detects issues.
Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen Recording, uncheck your browser, click Apply, then check it again and click Apply. Quit browser completely (Cmd+Q), restart it, and try screen sharing again.
This resets the permission.
System recently updated and permissions resetMajor macOS updates sometimes reset permissions. After updating macOS, always re-verify that Screen Recording permission is still granted: System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen Recording > ensure browser is checked. Re-grant if needed and restart browser.
Full Disk Access confusionScreen sharing typically needs Screen Recording permission, NOT Full Disk Access.
Full Disk Access is for file system access (rarely needed for browser screen sharing).
If someone mentioned Full Disk Access, they likely meant Screen Recording. Check Screen Recording permission first.

Additional Tips:

  1. Update macOS: Ensure your macOS is up to date. Apple frequently releases updates that improve security and compatibility.
  2. Restart Your Router: A simple router restart can sometimes resolve network-related issues that might be affecting screen sharing.
  3. Check Internet Connection: Ensure you have a stable and strong internet connection. Poor connectivity can lead to dropped screen shares.
