If screen sharing isn’t working, won’t start, or shows permission errors during your assessment, browser extensions, privacy settings, or permission blocks may be preventing screen capture. Screen sharing is required for proctoring, and failures can prevent you from starting or continuing your test. This guide helps you troubleshoot screen sharing issues and ensure proper functionality.

✅ Common Causes and Fixes

What might be wrongHow to fix it
Browser extensions blocking screen sharingDisable browser extensions that block tracking or modify privacy settings. Common culprits: uBlock Origin, AdBlock, Ghostery, Privacy Badger, DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials, NoScript.
Chrome/Edge: Menu > Extensions > toggle off all extensions.
Firefox: Menu > Add-ons > Extensions > disable all.
Safari: Safari > Settings > Extensions > uncheck all. Refresh the page after disabling.
Site doesn’t have screen sharing permissionsGrant screen sharing permissions to the assessment site.
Chrome/Edge: Click lock icon in address bar > Site settings > Screen share or Display capture > Allow.
Firefox: Click lock icon > More information > Permissions > Display capture > Allow.
Safari: Safari > Settings for This Website > Screen Recording > Allow. Refresh after granting permissions.
Operating system hasn’t granted screen recording permissionMac: System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen Recording > check the box next to your browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge) to allow screen recording. Your browser must quit and restart after granting this permission.
Windows: Screen capture permissions are typically browser-level, ensure browser has necessary access in Privacy settings.
Multiple browser tabs or windows causing conflictsClose all other tabs or browser windows that might be attempting screen sharing. Only keep your assessment tab open. Close video conferencing tools (Zoom, Teams, Meet) or remote desktop software (TeamViewer, AnyDesk) that can conflict with screen sharing.
Using wrong browser for screen sharingUse Google Chrome (recommended), Microsoft Edge, or Firefox for best screen sharing compatibility. Avoid Safari on older macOS versions, Opera, Brave, or other Chromium-based browsers with heavy privacy modifications that may block screen sharing.
Corporate or school network blocking screen sharingCorporate firewalls or network policies may block screen sharing protocols. Try switching to a personal network (home Wi-Fi, mobile hotspot) if possible. Contact your IT department if you must use the corporate network, they may need to whitelist screen sharing for assessment sites.
Screen sharing dialog doesn’t appearThe screen sharing permission dialog should pop up when you start sharing. If it doesn’t appear, check that pop-up blockers aren’t enabled.
Chrome/Edge: Address bar will show a blocked pop-up icon, click it and allow pop-ups for the site. Your browser may need to be in focus (active window) for the dialog to appear.

🧪 Final Check: Test Your Screen Sharing Setup

Before your session, confirm that your device allows screen sharing. 👉 Run a Screen Share Test to ensure WebRTC is functioning properly. You should be able to see a screen preview and select the window or tab to share.
