Remote assessments have become essential for hiring and certification processes. Talview’s Assessment module uses proctoring technology to ensure these exams are conducted fairly, securely, and with integrity. This article explains why proctoring is important, how it works, and what candidates can expect during the assessments.

Why We Use Proctoring in Assessments?

Proctoring helps maintain the integrity of the assessment process by verifying the candidate’s identity and monitoring the exam environment to prevent cheating or any unauthorized activity. This is crucial because remote assessments are vulnerable to dishonest behaviors such as impersonation, use of unauthorized devices, or accessing external help. By using advanced proctoring technology, we create a secure and trusted testing environment where candidates can showcase their true abilities without concerns of unfair advantage by others. Proctoring also helps clients and organizations who use Talview assessments to trust the results, enabling them to make informed decisions during hiring or certification processes. It brings the reliability of in-person exams to remote assessments, offering convenience without compromising on exam security.

How Does Proctoring Work?

Our proctoring system combines artificial intelligence (AI) and, where needed, live human oversight to monitor assessments comprehensively. Here is how it works from a candidate’s perspective:

✔️Identity Verification

Before starting the exam, candidates must verify their identity using facial recognition and other security checks. This ensures the person taking the assessment is the registered candidate and prevents impersonation.

✔️Secure Exam Environment

When the exam begins, a secure browser environment is activated that restricts the candidate’s ability to switch tabs, open other applications, or copy and paste content. This browser lockdown protects exam content and prevents access to unauthorized resources.

✔️Real-Time Monitoring

AI-powered algorithms, including our patented AI Proctoring Agent, Alvy; continuously analyze video, audio, and screen activity to detect suspicious behaviors such as off-screen glances, whispering, multiple faces in frame, background voices, or browser window changes. The system flags anomalies like unusual eye movements, device tampering, or unauthorized software access in real-time for review. This multi-modal monitoring ensures exam integrity by identifying patterns of potential cheating without relying solely on rigid rules.

✔️Environment Checks

Candidates may be asked to perform environment scans like showing their workspace or doing a 360-degree room scan to ensure no prohibited materials or devices are present.

✔️Flagging and Intervention

If the AI detects any irregularities, it automatically flags these for review. In setups with live proctoring, human proctors can observe the candidate throughout and intervene immediately if they spot any issues.

✔️Record & Review Option

In some cases, exams are recorded in full to allow thorough post-exam review (Playback session) by proctors or clients. This ensures all suspicions are carefully checked before finalizing results.

Understanding Proctoring Flags and What They Mean

Our proctoring system may sometimes raise “flags” during your assessment when it notices something unusual in your test environment. These flags simply mark moments for review to help keep the exam fair and consistent for all candidates. Common flags include:
  • Multiple faces detected in the camera view, suggesting possible assistance from others
  • Frequent looking away from the screen or extended absence from the webcam view
  • Background noises or conversations detected during the exam
  • Attempts to switch browser tabs or use unauthorized applications
  • Sudden changes in lighting or environment, which may indicate suspicious activity
It’s important to understand that a flag does not automatically mean misconduct. Flags are signals for review, and all flagged sessions are carefully analyzed by proctors or AI systems before any final decisions are made. Candidates are encouraged to remain calm, follow all instructions, and maintain exam discipline to minimize the chances of being flagged. This transparent process helps create a trustworthy and fair exam environment for everyone.

Preparing for Your Proctored Assessment

Proper preparation ensures a smooth and successful proctored experience. Review these steps to set up your environment and system in advance:
  • Test your webcam, microphone, and internet connection before you begin your assessment.
  • Choose a quiet, private room with consistent lighting and no prohibited items like notes or extra devices.
  • Close all unnecessary applications and disable notifications to avoid accidental tab switches.
  • Have your government issued ID ready for identity verification at the start.
  • Charge your device and use a stable power source to prevent interruptions.
Following these guidelines reduces technical issues and flags, allowing you to focus on performing your best during the assessment.
