# Understanding the Step column

The **Step** column in the **Candidate Management** view indicates the current stage of a candidate within the exam workflow. It helps proctors quickly understand where each candidate is in the process and whether any action or attention is required.

### **Overview of the Step column**

The Step column provides a **visual indicator** of a candidate’s progression through the session lifecycle. Instead of reading detailed logs, proctors can glance at this column to assess the candidate’s current state.

**Common Step Indicators**

You may see the following indicators in the Step column:

* **In Progress (Active Step)**
  * Displayed as a **green check icon**.
  * Indicates that the candidate has successfully completed the previous step and is currently progressing normally.
  * No action is required from the proctor.
* **Pending / Waiting**
  * Displayed as an **hourglass icon**.
  * Indicates that the candidate is in a waiting state (e.g., in the lobby or awaiting the next step).
  * The proctor may need to take action, such as checking in the candidate.

### Using the Step column

The Step column helps you:

* Quickly identify candidates who are **waiting or stuck**
* Monitor candidates who are **progressing normally**
