# Why is my external camera not connecting?

If your external camera is not detected or does not work during a test or interview, it is usually caused by connection, permission, or software conflicts. A working camera is mandatory for identity verification and proctoring, so this issue must be resolved before you proceed.

In this article, you’ll learn why external cameras fail to connect and how to fix the issue step by step.

### 🔍 Why This Happens

External webcams may fail to connect for one or more of the following reasons:

* Loose or faulty USB connection
* Camera permissions not granted in the browser or operating system
* Another application already using the camera
* Incorrect camera selected as the default device
* Outdated or corrupted camera drivers
* Temporary system or hardware glitches

### ✅ How to Fix External Camera Connection Issues

Follow the steps below in order until the camera is detected.

**1. Check Physical Connections**

* Ensure the webcam is **securely plugged into a USB port**
* Try a **different USB port**
* Inspect the cable for damage or looseness
* Avoid using USB hubs; connect the camera directly to the system

**2. Check Browser Camera Permissions**

Make sure your browser is allowed to access the external camera.

* Click the **lock icon** next to the website URL
* Open **Site settings / Permissions**
* Set **Camera** to **Allow**
* Select your **external webcam** from the device list
* Refresh the page after making changes

**3. Close Conflicting Applications**

If another application is using the camera, it cannot be accessed by the test platform.

* Fully close apps such as **Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Skype, Google Meet**, or screen recorders
* Check background processes using:
  * **Task Manager (Windows)**
  * **Activity Monitor (macOS)**

**4. Set the External Camera as the Default Device**

If your system has both an internal and external camera, ensure the correct one is selected.

**On Windows:**

* Go to **Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera**
* Ensure camera access is enabled for apps and browsers

**On macOS:**

* Go to **System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera**
* Confirm browser access is enabled

**5. Test the Camera Outside the Session**

* Use a camera testing page or system camera app
* If the camera works elsewhere, the issue is likely permission-related
* If it doesn’t work at all, the issue may be hardware or driver-related

**6. Update Camera Drivers**

**Windows:**

* Open **Device Manager**
* Expand **Cameras / Imaging Devices**
* Right-click the external camera and select **Update driver**

**macOS:**

* Camera drivers are updated via **system updates**
* Go to **System Settings > Software Update**

**7. Restart Your System**

Restarting refreshes hardware connections and clears temporary conflicts that may block camera access.
